A packed house at The Boardroom International Surfboard Show watched Rex Marechal, of Forresters Beach, NSW Australia, claim the 2017 Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters Shape-off. The shape-off competition featured 11 shapers all attempting to replicate a classic Kelly Slater surfboard shaped by this years Icon of Foam honoree Al Merrick.
“I can’t believe it. I’m over the moon,” said Marechal. “I’m so stoked to be able to come up with the goods. What an honor to win the Al Merrick Shape-off. Al is such an inspiration. He impacted our designs so much: year after year, decade after decade. And to compete against this incredible pool of international talent — it is quite an honor. ”
The ten international shapers were: defending champ Nick Palandrani, Chris Christenson, Johnny Cabianca, Ward Coffey, Wayne Rich, Roger Hinds, Ryan Sakal, Gary McNeil, Matt Kinoshita, Zack Flores and eventual winner Rex Marechal. Each was asked to replicate the same exact board, one of Kelly Slater’s personal boards from early in his career, circa 1990. They each received 1.5 hours in the shaping bay and the boards judged by Icon of Foam honoree Al Merrick. US Blanks provided all the foam for the event and $1K was awarded to Marechal and his name etched into the Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters Mike Marshall perpetual trophy.
